What does a breast care nurse do?

A breast care nurse is a registered nurse with additional training in caring for people with breast cancer.

Receiving treatment for breast cancer is often overwhelming, and it can sometimes feel like information overload. A breast care nurse such as Julie is here to give you clear information. She supports you from your first contact with Gault Surgery, helping you feel prepared for your first appointment and following up to make sure you are comfortable with and understand your treatment.

Throughout your treatment, Julie helps to coordinate your care and provides support to you and your family, such as directing you to helpful resources and giving practical advice.

Our whole team is here to support you, tailoring a treatment plan to you and keeping you informed and in the driver's seat. Julie can help translate complicated medical terms into everyday language and act as a link between you and the rest of your medical team. She can answer your questions throughout treatment and help make sure you understand your treatment plan.

You might find yourself wondering:

  • "Is this normal?"
  • "Can I do this activity after my surgery?"
  • "How long will my treatment take?"
  • "Where can I find extra support?"

These are the sorts of questions Julie can help you with as she supports you throughout your care with Gault Surgery.

What happens as part of my care?

These are the steps you can expect in your care with us:

  1. Your care usually begins with a referral from your GP. You will then be booked in for an initial appointment with breast and general surgeon Dr Gault.
  2. Julie, our breast care nurse, will phone you before your consultation if time permits.
  3. At your initial appointment, Dr Gault will assess you and discuss a treatment plan tailored to you, or arrange any further tests needed first. He will explain the options available to you and the order in which things will happen.
  4. After your appointment with Dr Gault, you will see Julie, who will provide support and education to you and your family. Julie can help you feel heard and confident, explain each step and work closely with Dr Gault to answer any further questions. She can also direct you to helpful resources and organisations that offer further support.
