Dr John Gault

Dr John Gault was born and raised in Northern Ireland where he studied and received his formal qualification in Medicine at Queens University in Belfast. Dr Gault relocated to Australia early in his medical career and completed his Fellowship in General Surgery with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Surgeons. Dr Gault has undergone extensive training in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery in Australia, Europe and the United States, gaining substantial experience in both these areas.

In addition to his private practice, Dr Gault has several notable achievements and involvement in key projects, including:

  • Being a Staff Specialist at The Gold Coast Hospital Robina Campus since 2008.
  • Playing a major role in establishing the General, Breast and Melanoma services at Robina for the Gold Coast district.
  • Establishing a Breast reconstruction and oncoplastic service in the public hospital system on the Gold Coast.
  • Consulting at Breast Screen Australia at the Southport Branch.
  • Pioneered and established a Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand Fellowship training position in Breast surgery at the Gold Coast Hospital; Robina.

Special Interests and Approach

Dr Gault has a special interest in the developing field of oncoplastic surgery and has undertaken extensive further training in this area both in Australia and overseas. Oncoplastic surgery is a combination of breast cancer surgery and plastic surgery, incorporating advanced surgical techniques to achieve the best oncological and aesthetic outcome after breast surgery,  The aim of oncoplastic surgery is to aid improvement of women’s long term quality of life and body image after breast cancer treatment. Oncoplastic surgery provides more choices to patients with breast cancer.

The approach Dr Gault provides is a multidisciplinary treatment approach to both breast cancer and melanoma patients. This treatment approach is based on current evidence and is patient-centered. It incorporates a professional team consisting of a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist, pathologist, breast care nurse, physiotherapist and the availability of an oncology psychologist. He aims to educate his patients and is always willing to answer questions and discuss treatment options.

With his wide experience and expertise in caring for patients with both malignant and benign diseases coupled with his passion to provide compassionate patient-centered care, Dr Gault provides a service that is both empathetic and professional.

Services Provided

In addition to his experience in treating breast cancer, Dr Gault also holds experience in the treatment of malignant melanoma, as well as the use of Sentinel lymph node biopsy and lymph node dissection for the management of lymph node involvement.

Dr Gault provides laparoscopic and endoscopic general surgery services with an interest in gall bladder surgery, hernia repairs and thyroid surgery.
